The beginning of the Catholic Church in Arizona can be traced back to 1539 A.D. when a Franciscan friar, Marcos de Niza, traveled up through the Gulf of California into a northern territory (now Arizona and New Mexico) which had never been explored. He planted a cross on the land and named it “The New Kingdom of St. Francis.”
Today, the Diocese of Phoenix Catholic Cemeteries and Funeral Homes owns and operates six Catholic cemeteries and two Catholic funeral homes within its borders, fulfilling its mission, the Corporal work of Mercy to bury the dead and care for the grieving.
